Kuldīga Cultural Centre

Kuldīga Culture House was built at the beginning of the 20th century as the Kuldīga Commonwealth Society House. The building has undergone several radical renovations, resulting in the loss of its original image. The project combines and restores the most successful details and solutions from the various periods of reconstruction, bringing them together in a single new façade solution.

The main functional concept of the building is to divide it into two zones: one for visitors and the other for staff and artists. One major benefit of the proposal is the significantly increased capacity of the Great Hall. This has been achieved by creating an extension in the courtyard that does not interfere with the existing structure of the street space. As a new structure, a basement has been designed, respecting the existing building as two free-standing volumes without visible connections, thus gaining the necessary additional space.

The competition proposal also addresses the inner courtyard as an indivisible part of the cultural center, designing it as an open public space. The central space of the courtyard features a thematic cinema map of the neighborhood embedded in the paving. This map relates to the cultural history of Kuldīga and serves both as an educational element and as a place for relaxation and cultural events. The landscaping proposal was developed by landscape design studio Alps.
