Riga Philharmonic

Baltic refers to the Baltic Sea, people, states and languages. It is derived from the ancient Proto-European word root bʰel, which means white, shining and fair – balts, mirdzošs, gaišs. Bʰel is also associated with the voice, sound. Thus the Baltic Shine is interpreted within the project as the unique character, unique voice of the Baltic nature, culture and music. With the respect for the historic UNESCO heritage of Riga blue-green belt and historic center architecture the project intends to carefully implement the aetheric, nature-inspired Baltic Shine idea into the former modernist building providing an uplifting and vibrant atmosphere for the experience and creation of the music and providing new public infrastructure for Riga citizens, guests and musicians.

The image of the new Riga Philharmonic is balanced between respectful continuation of the historical blue-green belt of the Kronvalda park, preservation and reinterpretation of the architectural heritage of the Kongresu Nams modernist building and the introduction of the new, open and aetheric Baltic Shine image into the historic park.

One of the main features creating the unique aesthetics of the new Riga Philharmonic is the new waved facade. Glazed ceramic panels reflect the light and make the building shimmer differently with every change in mood of the ambient light. It creates a moving play of light throughout the day by reflecting the environment from multiple angles. The effect is just like the radiant reflections of the sun in the Baltic Sea, that changes according to the natural light.
The shapes of the waves are inspired by nature – Latvian coastlines and rivers – Riga gulf, Daugava river and Riga city canal. They serve multiple purposes throughout the building and landscape.

“Baltic Shine has been awarded 1st prize in the international Riga Philharmonic architecture competition.
