The aim of the Tukums 2nd Secondary School reconstruction project is to renovate and modernize the existing school building, as well as integrate a new building for the primary school. By complementing the clear spatial structure inherited from modernist architecture with the human scale and interaction between indoors and outdoors characteristic of northern European schools, the 1960s-style school is transformed into a modern, open, and inviting learning environment.
The new volumes connect the building blocks to each other and spatially close the existing courtyard, which becomes the central core of the school—a reminiscence of the wider world. It is accessible from both the old and the new parts of the school and serves as an attractive social platform for pupils of all grades to come together.
